Data visualizaiotion

Using local excel tools or external software like Tableau and ARC GIS, I aim to make digestible and intuitive data visual designs.

data story through tableau

For a Final Project I created a data story in Tableau studying how the top 5 food producing counties in California are food insecure.

  • Used Tableau Prep in order to clean and filter data sourced from the USDA.

  • Created Sheets with individual visuals using coloring and design principles to make a cohesive design.

  • Created Interactive dashboaards connecting 3+ visuals to draw connections about low income and low access to race and poverty rates filtered by county.

  • Combined all of the dashboards in a story to create an interactive data story.

ARC GIS mapping

Through basic introduction of ARC GIS and utilization of some of Cal Poly's available data, these are some maps I've created.

  • Used data from Cal Poly data base

  • Utilized symbology with design knowledge to make an appealing and digestible

  • These projects allowed me to gain a taste of what the ARC GIS software is capable of

interactive tableau Dashboard

This project was a first introduction to Tableau using San Diego 2022 AirBnBs, relating county an median prices according to day.

  • By creating diffierent sheets, we were able to utilize tree maps, heat mapping through map, and a line graph.

  • These charts were combined together in a dashboard that was made interactive through filtering of the county tree map

  • Formating axis and numbering allowed us to get the desired effect

Pivot tables and pivots charts

This project using a data set of student preferences allowed for the making of different pivot tables comparing different categorial and numeric data points. â€‹

  • Pivot tables allow for specific factors to be compared within big data sets to draw connections between them

  • Filtering abilities in the charts allow for a more specific viewing of data

  • Pivot splicer tool allows for the quick viewing of specific and interactive data

  • Grouping through Pivot Analyze allows for grouping of repeat data easily without cleaning it.

tableau line graph

Using a data set pertaining to the stock market of the top tech companies, a simple line graph was created as an introduction to different tableau features.

  • Understanding of categorical and numeric data helped to put the proper column and row

  • Principles of color and design were utilized in the choice of red for emphasis on the APPL stock and grays for the other stocks

  • Formatting of numeric values and axis were utilized.

Applying simple color design to excel charts

Exercises using the native chart tools in excel were done in order to show how the power of simple design, the design principal of color, and getting ride of visual clutter can create a clear narrative told through data.

  • Utilizing simple charts in excel, using the chart tool this bar graph was created.

  • Using an accessible color, blue, different shades were selected to show the difference of year, additionally allowing the color axis to be deleted.

  • Allignment of axis with graphs allows caters to the natural "z pattern" viewers have when reading.

Comparative bar charts

This exercise utilizing comparative bar charts with a negative and positive axis to show sale increased and decreases allow the viewer to quickly and clearly get a feel of the data narrative.

  • The color blind neatral color of orange was used along with text bolding in the title in order to make data narrative imediately clear

  • Grey colors reduce design from color clutter

  • Axis with clear labeling allow for ease of viewing.

  • All caps texted was used in order to minimize miss-alignment and confusion of lines, thus making a more visually appealing exprerience.

heat mapping with bar graph

This excercise explore the power of combining two charts that can help create a narrative connected by color.

  • The heat map uses higher rates of % TOT with darker purple and lower rates of % TOT with lighter shades of purple, tied into the bar chart as well.

  • The connecting lines on the bar graph further illustrates the extreme differnece in % OF TOT

power of color within line charts

Focusing on color in line graphs alone, simplifying all other elements allowed for the data to speak for itself.

  • Color utilized in title and the lines associated with year and the high or low number of vehicles sold allows for viewer to understand the data narrative upon viewing.

  • As seen in the downloaded preview, I tried to use an ombre effect to better illustrate my point. Although I feel like solid colors did a better job.

Exploring different ways to convey data

An exercise in the chart tool allowed for exploration in different chart visualizations that have different effectiveness in conveying a data story. This data set compared Indirect vs. Direct sales approaches and through color and simplification of the charts, the data narrative became clearer.

  • By adding the main objective of the narrative to the title we decrease the work the viewer has to do.

  • Color blind neutral colors of orange and blue were used to differentiate different data points.

  • Dual axis bar graphs illustrated the days til close a bit more clearly compared to the plot chart.

  • Allignment of axis with graphs allows caters to the natural "z pattern" viewers have when reading.

Combining text to supplement simple data narative.

Combining all previous lessons from previous exercise, this graph seeks to make the data narrative clear with additional text drawing attention and explaining certain data points without adding clutter.

  • With clear color color blind accessible colors of gray and orange, orange draws connection between data narrative stated in title, points of interest, and times of interest.

  • Complimentary text with lines connected to the points of interest, certain aspects of the data are explained in a brief and illuminating way.

  • Alligment of axis title allows for ease of viewer viewing and traveling of eye.

Color, text, and connecting lines in bar graphs

Using data to explain monthly attrition rates, color, text, and lines are used to draw attention and illuminate certain aspects of trends noticed throughout the data.

  • Color blind neutral color choices of green, yellow, and orange were made in order to highlight different seasons and their observed attrition rates.

  • Tying in those colors to text boxes connected to the specific bar charts add some context to the data while making associations clear.

  • Minimizing clutter of excessively long axis titles was also used.
